The new movie "Rush"

This movie resonated with me in a way that few do, as I rarely find movie characters who share my viewpoints.

The Nikki Lauda character, when he spoke of the need to manage risk, expressed my views about climbing.  As he said, you need to keep the risk under control, you need to stay on top of it.

When my "friendly" climbing rival died on a climb those many years ago, back when we were taking turns leapfrogging past each other's achievements on our separate climbs, he let the risk get away from him.  Before he left for the climb, I argued with him about his plan for attacking the mountain in Chile, pointing out the unacceptable risks involved in his approach, but he blew my words off as just an attempt to dissuade him from outdoing me.

That was his decision, and his resultant  death was his consequence.

In any case, my recommendation to anyone reading this is to get an accurate fix on the level of risk involved in a given approach to what you are doing (involving "safe sex", for example), and make sure that you always stay on top of the situation, so that the risk never becomes unacceptably high
