Lloyd Center is convenient to most areas of town, is less expensve than downtown yet is a short light rail hop from downtown and Pearl District. Residence Inn and Doubletree are two good choices.

I loved staying at the Heathman Hotel, located Downtown. Not only is 50 Shades of Grey filmed there, it is also one of Historic Hotel's of America top properties and feels just like magic.  

But do your research because a lot of the high end hotels in DT Portland require key cards to get to the upper floors, such as Hotel Rose.
